October 12th is National Farmers day and NYC represents! There are a few urban farms in the city and the Battery and Added Value are just two of them.
The Battery is in Battery Park and takes donations from various corporate donors, and many of these donors also give time and manpower. The mornings are spent with local school children, and the food that is produced is donated to area school cafeterias.
Added Value Farm is out in the Red Hook neighborhood in Brooklyn and is an old converted baseball field. They run a farm stand on Saturdays, and is easy to get to with the Ikea ferry. They also take volunteers to help with the crops.
